Do most of you guy have your 16s titled and registered? I am looking at a 2005 Hobie 16 in FL, but I live in TX -- the Parks & Rec here basically told me if I was buying a boat in a title state and the owner could not provide title -- good luck getting it registered in Texas.

The owner says he bought it from a dealer and never titled or registered...I know in Texas the dealer fills out all the paperwork and you do it at purchase...

Any suggestions?

In my experience, very few Hobies in Florida are titled. I'm not sure about the law though.

in fl if its longer then 16 then you are supposed to register it and get fl numbers. a hobie 16 is 16.7 so technically you are supposed to but no ones going to say any thing. mines not resisted and all the boats around me are not either.

Anything in NC over 16 feet has to be titled and registered. Trailer too.

I've had 4 Hobie 16's through the years,the last four all being used boats. I've never had a title on any of them. Trailer registration yes, but no on the boats.

Will a simple bill of sale do the trick? I'm in California and no pink slip is needed to transfer title for the boat or trailer. Just a bill of sale. There may also be a fillable DMV form to make the process easier/quicker.

A bill of sale is not adequate in TX. They said I had to contact the Florida DMV and track down the title history of the boat, plus the seller would have to sign an affidavit stating why the boat was not ever titled. ALL hoops you have to jump thru doing a transaction from 900 miles away. Needless to say, too much for me to want to attempt, plus why would the seller want to agree to it and slow down his selling process -- apparently no one cares in Florida if your 16 is not registered; however, in TX the cutoff is 14ft and I would be in too many places with TPWD (water police) that would have no problem, writing me tickets.

It may be different if I was buying from a non-title state, but they told me the owner in FL is required to have a title; therefore, to bring it to TX -- I had to have a the title.

The trailer was not titled either, but based on my calls -- that would not have been any issue getting it registered here.

Too bad, it was a nice 16...guess I will keep looking.

I hardly ever see a 16 that is registered around here... But the letter of the law says it should be. :wink:

Florida does not require a title. Boats are legally listed by the manufacturer in a class size. The Hobie 16 is legally listed as a 16 regardless of what the actual length of the boat is. The reason for this is that in the boating world an owner can add item that will make the boat measure longer than the manufacturer built it as, items such as swim platforms, it in the case of a Hobie, rudders, cheata motor mounts, etc. The State legally recognizes it as a 16' which does not require a title. You can get a registration if you want it but there is no legal requirement in Florida to have one.
