Hello all, I recently purchased a 1977 Hobie 16, and while I have sailed smaller boats
before, I can't for the life of me figure out how to reev the main sheet blocks. It has the old Seaway
5:1 blocks. Does anyone have any pictures, advice, or diagrams for dummies on how to get this
thing setup so I can hit the water. This is my first Hobie and can't wait! I have searched the forums, and have just confused myself even more! Any help would really be appreciated. Thanks

Thanks Matt!

I have 2 single pulleys on the boom, and a lot of the pics show 3. Any pics with
Just 2 pulleys on the boom?

Should be virtually the same as this one, but the forward is single instead of this double.

Man, look at that old-school stack-up! Must be twice the height of modern blocks.

Remember that the block with the becket (the extra piece that the end of the line ties to) always goes towards the stern on the boom.

Ok, thanks guys! In the picture, why is the main sheet not running thru the traveler car?
Where do you tie stopper knots? Are there 1 or 2 stopper knots to tie? I get how the sheet goes thru the pulleys, but the traveler car and cleat jaw thing are confusing me still. Please excuse my horrible lack of sailing vocab. Thoughts?

Almost there.

The end of the line that you currently have threaded through the "cleat jaw thing" and traveler car and ends with the stopper knot in the picture, that needs to be unthreaded from there and run back up to the block hanging off the boom and tied off to the becket on the bottom of that block. The end of your mainsheet that is out of the picture then gets threaded through the "cleat jaw thing", through the traveller car, then through the dead-eye on the rear crossbar and then tied off with a stopper knot (as you currently have, you just put the wrong end of the line through the traveller). If you are used to other mainsheet systems, the Hobie way can be confusing. When rigged correctly, you end up with a loop of line in your hand. One end leads to the mainsheet blocks and the other end leads to the traveller. That way you can work both the mainsheet and the traveller while you are trapped out on the wire.

Matt,

The picture you posted shows a different arrangement that shown on the link by Sunvista. I believe his is correct. The sheet should be coming from the rear sheave (with the becket) down to the ratchet block.

After looking back at your post I see that the larger picture is correct but the second one is different.

I realized what i need to do right when it clicked that you don't actually hold the end of the sheet in your hand, unlike other boats I've sailed, and that you actually pull in on a "loop" of line, while the two end of the rope are tied off with stopper knots.......anyone get my explanation and agree?
I have sailed iceboats and you held the end of the sheet, not the middle
Thoughts?

Actually, can you guys look at my pics again? Do I need to switch the boom pulleys so that the one with the becket is in the rear of the boom instead?

While I have never used your exact set-up, I am guessing that you might be able to get the blocks a little closer together (which translates into maximum sheeting/flattest mainsail) if you put the block with the becket on the rear hanger. The difference will probably be minimal and possibly not even noticeable. Experiment with it and see which way you like better.
