How much line is needed for the 6:1 down haul,approximately? Replacing my line but am out of town so not sure how much I need. |

I've got 44' on mine, works good out on the wire but if it was 5-7' shorter it would still be fine. |

I measure 11' on my homemade 6:1. I wish it was a little longer. There is barely enough slack to install the downhaul after I raise the mainsail. I would suggest you buy 15' and cut it down once you see what length you need. |

Question for people on where they store the extra line after tightening the sail? How do you make sure the down haul does not come un-cleated during sailing by mistake? Any pictures would be helpful but a good description is equally good as I cant seem to find an answer to this question. Thanks! |

I have my downhaul line set up so that it is the minimum length for it to work. I've just been letting it go on the tramp because it really is only a couple of feet. I've never been concerned about it becoming uncleated. The cam cleat has a good grip on it and it would take a freak accident for it to become uncleated. |

I use to use a Hobie (large) storage bag connected to the tramp lacing to store all loose components. You'd be surprised as to how much it will hold. Main halyard, Ausi halyard, tow line, excess downhaul sheet, bottles of water, tools, e.t.c. It allows for a clean and obstruction free tramp. If your downhaul is cleated relatively snug, you shouldn't have any problems with it coming loose.

I am thinking of putting together 6:1 downhaul on my H16. Question: Does the three wheel pulley that has the clam clamp connected have a specific name? The one at the bottom of 6:1 that is screwed to the mast! Ask as trying to locate one. Thanks. |

Basically you want a 29mm triple block with becket and cam cleat for the bottom and a 29mm triple block at the top. A quick search found these: Bottom:  Top:

The bottom block is for sale on Harken right now for $43. That means you could set this whole thing up for near a $100 as opposed to what you would be retail for the whole set. |

The Hobie 2089 6:1 downhaul system uses Carbo blocks. $167.00 H344 and H347 $155 for both through Hobie Cat. A bit more direct from Harken. 21 feet of line. Also includes the required class legal parts for connecting it to the mast. |
