Hello! Although I have sailed for many years, it was mainly on 420s and 470s. I just bought a h Hobie 16 and would appreciate tips! Any one on Cape Cod sailing Hobies? |

I've not lived there for 20+ years, but I remember being a kid and talking a guy into taking me out on his H16 out of West Falmouth Harbor. Thing was absolutely screaming. We made it out and around Cleveland Ledge Light and back in under 25 minutes. Also, if you go to youtube and look for H16 porn, there are a bunch of vids from guys on Nantucket. I don't think Hobies are as numerous on the Cape as, say, 420s, Optimists and Sunfish, but they're around. Hopefully someone with some more recent knowledge will pipe up. Have fun! |

There's a Hobie rental place on Ridgevale Beach near Chatham. I would check with the owner and see if he can point you in the right direction. |

FloCapeCod, Yes there is one Hobie guy on the cape - me. My boat is out of Chatham Yacht Club on the south side of Pleasant Bay. I've been looking for other guys to sail with but the watermen this far down on the penninsula are too old and boring for Hobies! Fleet 448 does an annual sail from Fairhaven to Martha's Vineyard but they have not updated their website with the 2019 schedule yet. La Flama Blanca I just started sailing last year. I live in nh and there is a great lake near me that I am learning on but I might be up for a trip down your way this season. I am hesitant to go out on the ocean alone without more experience. |

Fleet 448 does a lot of its sails within Narragansett Bay, so you can get some ocean sailing without being in the open ocean. You can also often partner up with someone, either sharing your boat with someone of various levels of experience, or getting a ride with a more experienced skipper. Usually the schedule is done somewhere around 1 May with a more extensive schedule being done later in the month. Schedule depends upon site availability and volunteers to run event. But historically, in May this will be the schedule -- second weekend of May -- May 11 -- set up and maybe a sail at Goddard Memorial State Park. Sailing in Greenwich Bay. third weekend of May -- May 17 - 29 -- Madcatter in New York. We'll usually schedule a second event in May, but it depends upon who's going to the Madcatter and other availability. Jim Clark-Dawe |
