I have been looking for a used Hobie 16. It seems the only ones available close to me were built in the early 80's. I have been reading up on soft spots and delimitation and this is not a repair I feel like dealing with. Are soft spots/delamination a problem in all the 16's new and old or just the earlier built boats?

I believe it's an issue that can affect any fiberglass hull over time. I bought a used '84 last year. It was clearly stored well over the years. The hulls were in very good condition--no issues with soft spots. I was worried about dealing with that too.

The foam used on early model boats was not as stable or consistant as what has been used since the mid-late 80's.

1cjk,

I am not sure where in NW Florida you live, but I live in Panama City Beach, FL.

If you are looking a for good used cats, used parts for cats or someone who is an expert in fiberglass repairs, consider Pat Martin, owner of Starboard Marine in Panama City Beach. Also Brad Stephens, owner of Sunjammers Watersports is our Hobie distributor in Panama City Beach.

I saw this a lot too when I was researching used Cats, its an issue that (as stated above) can happen over time to any fiber glass hull. Its caused by people stepping on the hull and it just wears on the foam inside. Not sure what it costs to get fixed. But likely to be an issue with any Hobie in time if its not stored properly, and especially when they get a lot of use!
