Why does every dealer sell Hobie gear at MSRP? Is that Hobie mandated?

Prob due to the very little margin, like computers. Id imagine they barely break even on a boat then have to try to pay the overhead on accessories? I do know boats have a lot of skilled people and labor behind them unlike the junk from china sold by Walmart for peanuts on the dollar. I'd rather pay my local dealer $13 for a shackle even though they sell em on ebay for $10 for example. Brand new Hobie big ticket items are very expensive but you get what ya pay for, the stuff lasts decades.

I find most Hobie parts to be top quality gear at reasonable prices. You can certainly find cheaper parts, but rarely better parts for the money. Hobie parts are usually accompanied by excellent service, warranty, and advice from a knowledgeable dealer. I certainly put a value on that as well.

My post had nothing to do with good dealers being valuable. They are. My question was more about how these days you don't really pay MSRP for most things so why Hobie equipment, parts, etc?

Also, if I'm buying from an online dealer, then there isn't much added value.

Online dealers can be the death of a product. Discounting and reducing the value of an item until the margins in a product can not support a brick and mortar business. Without an actual brick and mortar dealer... there are no boat sales.

We don't allow dealers to be part-only dealers, so this limits the problem. They must support boat sales to stay a Hobie Cat dealer. This is why there are Hobie Cat dealers left in the World. Try and find a catamaran dealer of another brand... they are FEW and FAR between IF there are any. That does not support their legacy products, we do.

It's purely physiological. We're all used to never paying MSRP so it feels like a shaft.....
Hobie should mark up everything 30% and call that list, then have sale signs all over the place advertising items on sale/blowout at 30% off

Murrays seems to sell a lot of Hobie parts. Do they also sell boats?

I have owned my boat 29 years and it has been used a lot. We have a pretty long season here in NC. In that time there are very few parts that I have needed and what I did need I bought from dealers. The total cost for all that time has been insignificant. The only exception was a used sail I bought from someone who's boat was destroyed in his yard by a tree. Even then, the old sail was usable and I sold it. The advantages of buying from the dealer include getting the right part, getting advice on it, high quality, and availability. I would rather support a dealer and hope they will still be around when I need them than try to save a few dollars.

No - they are not an authorized dealer. They buy their parts from a dealer (at a discount), then resell them.

Hobie Cat Co. really doesn't like that arrangement, but there's little they can do to stop it. The relationship between Murray's and Hobie Cat has really soured over the years.

I wouldn't say... soured.

We still sell some items to Murrays... they sell some items to us. The disconnect comes when they are trying to sell Hobie proprietary parts. We have agreements with dealers that dealers have to support boat sales to be a parts dealer. Murrays is not a boat dealer and sells parts into our dealers territories, which takes away their livelihood and if that goes... their ability to maintain a store front goes. If the store fronts go, we can't sell boats, so we support dealers by trying to protect them from internet parts distributors.
