I was hoping I could get some advice on how to identify the mfg year of a Hobie 16 main sail. I need a new main and I've found one available that is supposed to be in great shape, but before committing to go see it, I wanted to find out when it was mfg so I can get an idea of the age. Current owner does not know. I know the sail number does not have anything to do with mfg date, but there is a handwritten number on the mfg tag " #81483 Hobie Sails mfg at Coast Catarmaran Corp USA " . Any help is appreciated. Thanks

I'd guess early 80's.

Thanks Matt. I tried posting a photo, but could seem to figure out how to attach to a topic thread. The sail is all white with the exception of the third panel up from boom, it's blue and pink. If it's from early 80's it's probably only marginally better than my original 87 I'm sailing with now. I'll probably save the cash and replace with new main over the winter. I'm sailing on a new jib I just picked up at the beginning of the summer.

Matt is on the money. Colours sound like the 'Plum Crazy 84 Nationals sail'

Thanks Matt15. You are spot on. It's the Plum Crazy 84 main sail. I appreciate the sail color progression chart. I'm going to pass on the main. My 87 main is the Mai Tai (pink, purple, blue) and it will function until I buy a new one. The guy with the 84 Plum Crazy main is asking $100 and says it has no rips, tears, holes or wear along the battens or luff. He's located around Groton, CT if anyone is interested.
