I am not sure this is feasible, but I thought I give it a shot. I will be in Floriday from Dec 15th to Jan 1st and would like to do some sailing. I don't want to spend the high fees to rent a H16 / H18 from a shop by the hour or day...

So what I was thinking if anyone one this forum has a "beater" H16 - something in the 800-1000$ price range that I could rent for the 2-3 weeks. (I would buy the boat from you, with the intent that you buy it back after the 2-3 weeks for 20-25% less than I paid) I can bring my own sails since that should be the only part that might experience some wear....
(I hate to just buy one off craigslist and then spend the last week trying to sell it again- or tow it back to Minnesota)

Thinking to go to Panama city, but south of there on the Gulf side would work as well....

I know this is a long shot but who knows... Thank you.

djshad0w, I think that's an awesome idea! We need a vacation Hobie exchange program. Seems like there should be good availability in FL to outright buy one, but I get not wanting to drag it back home.

If you're coming through I-65 in Alabama, I may be able to hook you up... I'm working on getting a second boat together right now. My primary boat is a '76 H16, and I value it (financially at least) slightly more than your cost range, and maybe even a bit more personally just due the potential downside of losing the boat permanently.

bmdumr, that would be awesome. Yes I am planning on driving on I-65 from Huntsville to Birmingham to Montgomery then hwy 82 and 231 to Dothan.
What are you missing on your second boat (I could bring my own sails / trapeze wires / trampoline..) and what do you think the price range on it will be?
I wouldn't really feel comfortable with your main boat as there is always the chance that something happens to it...

Great idea!!

I don't need to rent a Hobie for the week, but will be in the Ft Meyers area the week of Dec 8th. If anyone on that golf side wants to go sailing for even a couple of hours with a moderately experienced crew, let me know! I would love to get out on some soft water. It has gotten unbeleiveably cold up here early in the winter season. I am sure that the lakes up here are 'hard water' now. Tuesday morning was 9 degrees when I left the house. It feels like January or February up here!

If you want to go sailing anywhere up and down the west Florida coast, let me know by PM.

Hi JKKartz, sorry, I somehow missed your response! It would have been fun, although the weather turned cold that week and I didn't have any of my 'winter gear' with me.

We had time on the 11th, and that was a pretty good day. We ended up going out on a 42 monohull for a 4 hour cruise on the 12th that was nice, but again it was quite cold.

Thanks again for the offer, it is great to see such generous support in the group. If ever you get up to Michigan in the summer, let me know and I will take you out up here!

Steve
