Musical rudders

I've done the trailing edge bulge fix to my plastic rudders and they still hum at around 10 knots and up. There was not much of a bulge to begin with, but I shaved them down and cleaned and polished them up real nice and they still hum. I have installed nylon washers to take all the slop out of the attachments, but the entire head fitting has some slop on the pin. Do they sell oversized pins or bushings or anything to take care of this. My pins are aluminum but do not appear to be worn at all, just sloppy fitting. Thanks

What, you don't like the music!! It is great, I think you could talk to whales with Hobie rudders. My little 14 would scream as the speed increased. I always wondered what strange creature was under my boat humming. Maybe a dolphin or a whale, doubtful, considering I sail in a lake.

The slop in your rudder pins is not causing the hum. Take a straight edge and lay it on the rudder from the center of the blade and rock the straight edge towards the trailing edge. Somewhere from the middle of the blade back you will find a hollow, a place where the trailing edge is still higher. You can either fill the hollow spot or sand more of the trailing edge off. You want a constant curve from the leading edge to the trailing edge with no hollow spots. The trailing edge can either be a sharp point (hard to mantain) or a flat 1/16 inch or so. The water flowing over the hollow spot is causing the rudder to vibrate. Good luck.

One serious thought - sometimes if you have the rudders switched - on the wrong hull - they hum worse than when they're installed properly.

The angle of attack changes and will cause a lot of drag. In some cases the rudders will look pigeon-toed.
