Post subject:  Concrete on bottom of hulls

I purchased a boat from a dealer that rents cats at the beach, and to protect the hulls, the dealer put a protective material on the bottom of the hulls. I would like to take it off.

It is medium dark grey, and hard as rock. Any ideas as to what this stuff is? and any ideas on how to safely remove it?

Thanks!

Possibly a product I used many years ago known as 'Ceramkote'. But the greenish color in the photo does look like anti-foul with copper element.

Wow that's crazy looking. where it changes height can you tell if there are vertical seams ? like it's separate pieces? or does it seem to be all seamless? maybe the top is like a masking line and it's bed liner, with paint on it that has faded and worn off. it looks textured when I zoom in on the black areas?

Suddenly realized the confusion I may have accidentally caused. I posted a picture to show what antifouling paint looks like....it is not the original poster's boat in the picture. It was actually a boat I was considering buying a long time ago. Sorry about that!
You can go back and edit the post to delete the photo.

I don't have any good pictures of the material. But if you can imagine flipping your hulls over to do bottom work, apply a 1 inch wide stripe, about 1/8 inch thick, of this epoxy material, on the surface that typically gets ground down when dragging on the beach. You can barely see it when the boat is on the trailer, as it is only on the bottom.

I spoke to the dealer (Ocean Motion) and they stated it is Iron-crete from Mantek.

They also stated it might chip off. They have had some of this stuff fall off.

I suppose I need to be prepared to restore the bottom finish when I get this stuff removed.

Here is a reply to an inquiry to Mantek:
Quote:
Iron Crete is an epoxy which is identical (exept for color) to the epoxy resin which is mixed with glass fibers to form fiberglass.

Any chemical that will remove our product would damage the fiberglass, and a temperture high enough to soften it would also damage the resins in the fiberglass.

Sanding or grinding are your only good options. The product can be sanded or ground when fully cured.
