Hi All-

I wante to upgrade my traveler car on my H16. It is a 1984 so its got the old school set up with the rollers. Does anybody know how difficult it would be to replace the track so I could use a harken traveler car? What would this cost for the track? I saw a new travler car on ebay for cheap.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/HARKEN-S ... 7626QQrdZ1

Thanks!

That's not old school - that's the way they all are.

The only change that's been made since that time is to make the track a little deeper and the wheels a little bigger (and made of brass, not stainless steel).

The problem with a Harken track/car (in addition to it not being class legal) is that there's not enough friction in the system. If you are travelled out, and try to sheet in, more often than not you'll just pull the whole assembly towards you (as if you were pulling the traveller line).

It's a pain.

If you're hell-bent on replacement, you'd be better off replacing the track with the newer, deep profile track and a new, stock traveller car.

Cheaper too!

The Harken track and car are more money than the standard parts. Like Matt Bounds said... new deeper track and brass wheeled car are the go. They work great. You can just replace the track and then the lower part of the car (black with wheels). The upper part of the car is unchanged.

Good point Matt - I remember sailing on a Supercat last summer that had the harken car and track and completely forgot about the friction issue. The harken car moved so well that you were almost never able to actually sheet in. Thanks for the reminder. I think I will just upgrade to the brass cars.

Do you have the hobie part number for the deeper track ad brass wheels? I'm in the middle of a full rebuild and have my track off so if it's cost effective and wort it I may go that route.

Thanks
Cory

I didnt notice any problems with my track or traveler when I sailed this past summer so is it a worthwhile performance upgrade to do this?

Thanks,

Cory

As long as what you have works fine then I'd stay with that, now if you were needing to replace a track and/or car then I would upgrade for sure.
