My only real problem is with stepping the mast solo is side-to-side sway. How can I prevent that?

I normally step my mast solo, and just deal with the sway... you could try buying one of the crankup solo step products and use that... One model is designed to prevent side sway period. I dont have my catalog handy, so I cant tell you Hobies part number for it...

Have you tried staying in the middle of the tramp when you raise your mast??? Another option if you could do it, is to have your boat either pointed directly into the wind, or away from the wind..

I bought a mast stepper from Murray's last year.It comes with a pole that braces against the mast and eliminates side sway.I rig in a crowded parking lot and this handy little device removes the pucker factor completely.
