I built a righting pole for my Hobie 16. I know this has been discussed many times before but I thought I may help someone out refreshing the topic.
https://youtu.be/DPGWqVNe4k0I got my material build list from another post on here but I can't seem to locate it.
1 1/2" aluminum tube or wood dowel roughly 7'6" (width of the pylons)
4 - 2x4's cut at 8"
4 - 1/2" plywood cut 8x10"
Stainless bolts to secure pole to 2x4 blocks
1 1/2" screws to screw plywood to 2x4's
Contact cement and outdoor carpet for traction
Instead of using 1 1/2" aluminum tube I used a 1 1/2" wooden dowel and fiber-glassed over it. I tried to get away with 1/4" rope. but found 1/2" rope was required or the stretch was too great.
I've been going solo and there aren't many boats around for assistance. I have SeaTow but they can take up to 2-3 hours. Also I didn't feel confident in the righting bag system since it seems like there is a technique required to get it to work.
This system seems to get the job done and give me that extra leverage. Deployment is easy, un-bungie both ends of the stick. Toss the lines over the top hull each side of the pylon and secure with carabiner clips. Place the bottom of the righting pole into the groove on the bottom the hull. Walk out slowly and flip it back over.
