Mylar sails for the 16 (made by Hobie Cat) are class legal for racing.

They were made class legal in 1990.

However, Hobie doesn't make them anymore. The jibs delaminated quickly due to the wear on the mast, so they stopped making Mylar jibs after only a couple of years. Later on, the laminate Hobie used to build the sails was discontinued by the manufacturer, and that was that.

Racers tried them, then abandoned them after discovering that the Dacron sails were faster (and cheaper to replace). Most top racers replace their jibs every year or two and their mains every few years. White sails are anonymous and least expensive - that's why you see a lot of all-white sails at major events.

If you're really dead set on getting a set, keep an eye on eBay. Every once in a while a set will turn up.
