Post subject:  Trailer Setup

We're making the ten hour drive to pick up Paul's 17 this weekend. :)

We're taking the "best" H16 trailer we have, as we're searching for an appropriate trailer, and until we get the boat back home we won't know exactly what will work (may end up modifying a 16 trailer).

I know the beam of the 16 & 17 is the same but obviously the keel centerline will be narrower on the 17. Anyone know what the centerline dimension is? Other than spraying down the roller bolts with Liquid Wrench, in anticipation of making adjustments, any thing else we should plan for? I thought about getting some 2x8's to span from front to back on either side, for fear of point loading on the single rollers, or is this overkill for one ten hour trip?

Suggestions?

John,

The centerline of the 17 is 82 1/4 inches. Yes the 2x8's are a good idea, you don't want the centerboards to drop in case the line attached to them breaks.

Hi John,

Glad you replied, I was getting a bit nervous. I didn't even think about the centerboards  and thanks for the measurement!

John, for a trip that long, I take the boards out.

Not a big deal, just untie the handle and gently lower them until the spring drops out and you can unhook them in the front.

The front rollers are the ones that can hurt the boat. They tend to carry more of the load.
