6th time out on my 17 today and went 14 knots!!!
im sure you fellas are going a lot faster but hey i cant get enough.
havent got in the trap yet, will it get me a lot faster?

Short answer... YES!!! When you are on the trapeze, you can hold the boat down in stronger wind with more sheet tension. |

any body have any tips on how to start out. I've had a 17S for a few years now and have yet to summon the nerve to trap out. What's the best way to start? Big wind? Small wind? Someone else on board to save me if I screw up? What do I absolutely want to make sure I do NOT do when first trying this? Dan L |

The best way to learn how to trap out is on land. Get a feel for getting in and out when you don't have to deal with waves, and things going wrong while on the water. Strapped to the trailer is a good way to go if you don't have someone handy to sit on the other side of the boat to keep it from tipping |

I found that I needed to change the tiller extension when I started to trap from the wing. The stock tiller I had could not be extended. Then I switched to an aluminum one which could be extended but was too short to use from the forward portion of the wing. Once you get out on the trap, you can move forward and backward on the wing to keep the boat balanced in the water. Sometimes (lighter wind), it helps to be forward to get the bow down a bit. Anyway, I ended up purchasing the FX6 fiberglass stick. It runs around $130 and is light and long. I got mine from Surf City Catamarans. With regard to getting out on the wire the first time: If you're solo, it helps to have at least moderate wind. If the winds are too light, the extra leverage you exert on the boat being trapped out that far can cause the boat to heel toward you and, in a worse case scenario, you could pull the boat down on the windward side. If you do have crew with you, and the winds are light, have them move to the middle of the tramp or even on the other wing. Then you can keep the boat balanced even in light air. To get out on the wire: sit on the wing, hook into the wire and the slide your butt backward off the edge of the wing. Bend your knees up and use your feet to press against the side of the wing closest to the tramp and then push yourself outward. Do not try to stand up on the wing - you will unhook the harness. One other item is the angle your body forms relative to the water (ie. how high off the water you are). This can be set by adjusting the trap length (there is a rope that runs through the trap wire and a stopper on that rope which allows adjustment). I found that it helps to be angled upward a bit to start: ie so your body is not parallel with the water but is up higher than that. |

Hi Africat I used a garmin gps to capture the track and then a programme called gps utility, thats available online, to transfer the information into my gis software. I think you can use gps utility to transfer data from a few different gps sets into pretty much any mapping software including google earth. Its taken me a few hours to figure it out and Im always surprised if I get it to work again. Thanks Mbounds for your help posting! cheers |
