having got my restored 17 out a few times I am pleased at how quick it can be one up with main and jib in say 18/20 knots of wind. I will take the gps out on it but what kind of top speed have people got?

The 17 isn't much of a reacher, so it's top speed is probably not any different than a 16's. It's a most efficient upwind machine in 15+, but again, it's not a real speedster.

My guess is that you'd have a hard time breaking 25 kts with it. Most of the time, less than 20.

On my H17Soprt I've hit 26 knots once in a brief spirt surfing a wave on a broad reach. I've been in the low 20's several times and in the high teens often. Speeds were recorded on a Velocitek, SC-1 GPS Race Computer. 8)

Comparing my FX1 to my 17, and the maximum sensation of speed I've ever felt sailing either; the 17, specifically on a broad reach, feels noticeably faster than the FX1 on any point of sail (no spi). I've never GPS'd either, but I would be very surprised if the speed was not exceeding 20kts (in 15 to 18 of wind). Exhilarating!

That said, the FX1 outperforms the 17 on a few other points. But, I do wonder if a broad reaching 17 couldn't take home the "GPS max speed" (no-spi category) trophy.

I am still not fully used to the FX1, and am hoping for, and searching for, a similar sweet spot on it!

Peace,
