I recently had to replace the entire port casting and rudder assembly on my H17 and was adjusting the rudders for toe-in etc. Whilst I was at it I checked that the rudders were hanging vertically and noticed that they are about 1 1/2 inches further apart at the bottom than the top. Is this designed that way, or are my gudgeons out of alignment?

I also noticed that the rudder bolt holes on the new upper casting were not very well aligned and wondered if this could also have something to do with it? Although I can get the bolt through, it is putting an angular pressure on the rudder - which can't be good for it! Looks like some sloppy manufacturing, but I'm too far away to go complaining.

Now the niggly detail. The new castings have a rather poor rough black finish, and the old ones a nice smooth grey. Anyone have any idea if this black is a protective coat which wears away to smooth grey, or do I have to sand them lightly and paint them?

Thanks
Mark
