I broke the comptip section of my H17 mast. I have a new one but the old one seems pretty firmly glued in place. Any advice on the best way to get the remnants of the old fiberglass section out of the aluminium mast ? Thanks Allan |

If broken off flush... you need to carve out the foam and then cut the fiberglass from the inside to collapse within the aluminum extrusion. |

When I broke my mast a few years back I wanted to keep the comp tip. I removed mine unharmed by drilling off the heads of the rivets holding on the tang and used a punch to push the rivet bodies into the comptip. Then I used a heat gun to heat the aluminum mast around the comp tip to soften the bondo the factury used to seat the comptip into the extrusion. The comp tip pulled right out.

That works fine if there's something to grab on to - like a whole Comptip. Even if you've got a bit of a stub left of the Comptip, you could drill a hole transversely through the stub and string a piece of line through it to help pull it out. |

Thanks for the ideas. I have about 2 inches of comptip sticking out of the mast. I'm going to drill the foam out and cut a groove down the inside of the fiberglass section with a hacksaw blade, then heat the aluminium and try to pull and prise the thing out. Ill let you know how it goes. |

 If you didn't have enough comp tip to pull on (or horizontally through) , you could drill a hole down through the center of the comp tip (you would need a long bit) and insert a large moly bolt with a T handle attached to the other end to gain the purchase you would need to pull out the comp tip end from the extrusion.

You're on the right track! +2 that's how I got ours out...which was broke off flush I sawed towards the corners (if you will) where there's a little gap in each side at the mast track. Was then able to drive flat blade screwdriver/s in, then a chisel. Finally, with enough pressure, the epoxy joint popped loose. Used heat to take the good donor comp-tip out of a cut off mast...a longer process...lots of pounding with a mallet  Use your mast cradle as a vice...hope the weather's nice. Let us know how it went for ya |
