After I set my mast up Saturday I noticed the nut fell off inside the spreader bar. This nut holds the cable to the end cap of the spreader bar. The nut on the side that did not fall off is self locking, though it was loose also. To get to it, the rubber end cap has to come off the end of the bar to see the Phillips head of the screw the nut is screwed to. To get the new self locking nut on and tight I had to take off the mental end cap off of the spreader bar. I replaced the nuts on both sides to be on the safe side. Fortunately I noticed mine while the boat was still on the trailer.

Just wanted to notify the other Hobie 17 Sport owners to inspect theirs before they have a surprise failure. The nut can be seen from the cutout underneath the spreader bar where the metal rod comes through.

Sail on!

It would be worth putting some loctite on there too. Those self locking nuts are great but the loctite adds that extra safety.

Yes this has been a problem over the years. Fortunately if the nut comes off, as it did once to me, you don't get demasted, but you do bung up the end of the spreader channels a bit. Now I use both a lock nut and lock tight, so far so good.
