Unless you are running a spinnaker, I don't see much advantage in a self tacking jib. Tacks, even solo tacks, can go fast and smooth a little with practice.

Possible, but performance gains for the $$$$ would be minimal. |

thanks, i'm not intersted increasing my performance with jib. i'd like to put a self tacking rail for a faster tack going solo. reading forum opinions i think a square top main sail and a rolling reacher should increase performance of hobie 17. isn't it? |

Faster tacks? Not with a self tacking jib. You'll tack faster by backwinding the jib which won't happen on a self-tacker. Yes, the roller-furling jib will increase performance. Don't know about the square-head main - probably in lighter air, not so much for medium to heavy. Top of the mast is awfully bendy and can't really support it. |

thanks for your answers. i understand self tacking jib is not good for me. i'd like to mount a furling hooter on my boat. is possible to put this taveler in my jib track (it is integrated in the cross bar)?  cheers from anzio bay in italy. |

When my 2000 H17Sport flipped on the beach in a wind storm (bare wire), my mast snapped and the front crossbar was overstressed and cracked near each of the hulls (hurray for insurance). The new crossbar came with the integrated track so I bought the integrated track cars for the H16 (the one you have shown). I found that in order to be able to cleat while in the H17 track, I needed to add 15 degree wedges (made out of PVC flat stock and placed them between the car top and cleat bottom, held in place by the 2 bolts). I also changed the fixed horizontal angle to be more favorable for a soloer. To finish the project I fabricated adjustable inboard and outboard stops out of PVC flat stock. The inboard stops have a vertical hole drilled to attach the bungee for pulling the opposite sides car inboard and the outboard stop holds the outhaul pulley. Each of the 4 stops attaches to the integral track using 2 channel insert nuts (I originally used only one on the inboard stops, but the stops would slip over time). You may be better served by mounting the sheeting system similiar to a H18, the track is along the inside of the hull where the tramp attaches. |
