I thought most race courses had at least 3 marks with 2 of them (A&B) set up for a reach.

It's all or nothing. The boards are so small and inefficient that using a halfway setting really isn't necessary. Plus, for racing we're doing windward/leeward courses, so there is no beam reaching. sm |

All or nothing. Well, not actually nothing. As srm has explained before, it's really hard to get the knot on the line in the correct position to have the board completely flush with the bottom of the hull - and it's hard to pull it up that far and get the knot into the "cleat". There's actually less drag by having the board out an inch or so - it fills the slot in the hull more completely. |

There have been some calls to "bring back the reaches," especially when the breeze is up if only for the carnage to ensue. As a race officer, I'm willing to give them the reaches if I've got the conditions and resources (mark boats and marks) to pull it off correctly. The 17SE really doesn't like to reach and was the first class to go to exclusively windward/leeward courses with leeward gates at the 1996 Continentals. |

Though not a racer per-say (only been in 3 regattas in 28 years), I think it's a shame not to have reaches. That's where the fun is, both speed and power. There are times when it is blowing around 15-20 knots that I more resemble a windsurfer, doing one screaming reach after another. There isn't more fun than sitting on the back corner of the windward wing with the boat dialed-in, galloping through and surfing the waves on one hull - sweet. I gather the SE isn't a reacher because the lack of a jibe, because the Sport is a reaching fool, as is the skipper.
