Post subject:  Storing a H17 vertically
Any one here store a hobie vertically, either sideways or on its tail. I have a space for winter storage but the size would neccesitate storing it on its side or on end. With proper padding would there be any structural issues in storing the boat this way?

I think on the transoms would probably be fine- a lot of strength back there. I don't think I would do on the side. The sides of the hulls are pretty broad and flat, so I'd be worried about denting. If you do on the side, be sure to use a lot of padding.

Personally, I would probably take the hulls off of the crossbars and store it in pieces either stacked or side by side, but either way, with the hulls upright.

If you take the boat apart it stores well with the hulls upside down on foam blocks. This significantly shrinks the storage area and takes care of the wing tube filling/freezing problem. Also you can inspect the cross beams which are known to crack on the underside (I'm on my 4th front and second rear beam on my 2000 H17 Sport).

An alternative is to hoist it to the ceiling. I kept my 17 in my garage, and in the winter hoisted it up and parked the car under it. The trailer went under a tarp outside.
