Perhaps, but the benefit is that it allows the jib to be mounted about as low as possible which means lower center of effort for the rig, which means the boat can carry more power and therefore more speed. It probably came from a Nacra 6.0 or other similar high performance boat. sm |

I am adding the jib on a trial basis to see if improves tacking and more importantly speed. Mostly because I am well over the ideal crew weight at 230lbs. Because the 18 was purchased for parts, hulls are trashed, I used it's tiller cross bar as a temporary spreader. (BTW, an internet search on "bow spreader" brings up all sorts of interesting/scary items) Notched out the screw hole, filed it down nice and smooth and it fit right between the bridles. Will get a good picture later. Took her out today in very light winds for a few and was surprised at how much easier tacking was. Even with no cleats and the jib sheet run thru pulleys hanging from the adjuster at each shroud. Let me say adding a jib may not be permanent, have been sailing with a 16 main after blowing the OEM Pryde version and will make that decision after sailing the new flat top. But with my size and need for speed, really see no reason that more is not better. I can always furl the jib if needed. |

Please post several pictures of your setup. I'd put very little faith in the flimsy tiller-crossbar bow spreader, but am interested to see how the 18 rig looks on the 17! |

Finally got it on the water in some wind and have photographic backup to someone's warning that the tiller bar would not hold up. It bent a full 6 inches under pressure, really surprised it made it back to shore. On the positive side, she tacks like a champ. Even with no cleats. Will post some pics when I have to figure out how, should not be this difficult but it is late. |
