Post subject:  Hobie 17 Spreader
I am going to convert my '86 Hobie 17 to a sport version. In looking for a spreader (that won't break the bank), I noticed pictures of the solid metal " lower bridles" that were all bent. Original Hobie part is straight. Hard to tell but the pieces seem to be 8-12" long. I'm wondering why they are that long and if everyone ends up bending them?

I may end up getting a boom extrusion and cut it down to spreader length. This gives me the option to eliminate the "lower bridles" and replace them with "D' shackles. I will need to modify/replace my forestay anyway and can build "upper bridles" to compensate for the changes in geometry.

Has anyone tried this?
(I found a picture of a Prindle spreader with dolphin striker on a Hobie 17).

Can someone send me pictures of the ends of their standard Hobie Spreader pole (specifically in the area where the upper and lower bridles attach)?

Capri I did that conversion.
I dicked around trying to make up a system and avoid the Hobie cost. In the end I realised that the best option was to get the Hobie gear. It is properly engineered and works. Probably cost me $200+ to ignore this advice... :oops:

What was the issue that ultimately caused you system fail?
I'm not ready to give-up on a build it yourself.

Well I don't wanna be too harsh on meself... but I refused to do the mental gymnastics and admit there was zilch to be gained trying to do it better/cheaper myself.

Hey someone out there could probably do it just fine. But if the next owner sees that the boat is cobbled together from old fence posts and washing machine parts he is looking for a discount or another boat.

Seriously, the savings are marginal or illusional.
