Post subject:  Wood inside Hobie 17 wing tubes?

ImageA Hobie 17 wing was broken off at the deck during a storm. It turns out that the part of the tube that is normally inside the hull contains a square section piece of wood, that seems strange. Any idea why?

Check to see if it has been bent and the re straightened, Is the end cap original or has it been replaced. It may have been bent and then bent back and the piece of wood was inserted for added strength. It may have only bent this time if the wood wasn't in there. Just an idea who really knows.

I have found that little piece of wood in every Hobie 17 wing I have opened.
I always drill a 1/2" hole in the plastic plug so I can flush out the inside.
I even have one that the wood rattles around in.

The wood is there to give the wing tube strength. With the wing inserted into the hull the wood inside the tube will be past the hull, this adds some strength to the aluminum tube. You can repair the wing with welding, but you might want to put a smaller AL tube inside of it, be very carefull that the welder gets everything straight as the fit into the hulls is pretty picky on the alignment. Know how would I know that??? One of my wings was sheared off when I bought my boat so I have experienced alignment problems.

I took the wood out of my wings it was rotten and replaced it with PVC pipe that fit snug in the tubes.
