My rudders pop up quite often. What do I need to look at to keep them down?

My rudders pop up quite often. What do I need to look at to keep them down?

Arrange the boat so you can work the rudders up and down (on the trailer or prop up the rear end). Make sure that the rudder cam works properly - inspect it for damage - replace it if it's bent or chewed up. Use one of the kits that have "sister screws." While you have it apart, make sure the plunger and the bottom of the cam are well lubed (don't lube the cam where it comes into contact with the lock-down plate in the upper rudder casting). If the cam is OK, then lock down the rudder and check for fore & aft play (looseness). Take out the play by loosening the rake adjuster bolt (on top of the tiller arm casting), push the tip of the rudder forward as far as it will go, then using a screwdriver to force the rake adjusting bolt forward while you re-tighten it. (Stick the screwdriver into the slot that the bolt's in and use it as a lever). Don't force the bolt too hard. Try the lock-down mechanism - the rudder should lock down with a "SNAP." If it doesn't, you may have forced the bolt too hard. Loosen it and try again. Once all the play is taken out, if there's still a problem, there's a kick-up tension adjusting screw in the lower casting under the rudder cam. (It's a nylon screw about 3/4" in diameter.) Use a big screwdriver to screw it in to increase the tension. If you strip out the head, heat up the screwdriver with a torch and plunge it into the nylon screw. Let it cool, then you should be able to turn it. That pretty much covers all the bases. Good luck! |
