well here the story goes

so i finally finished the git rot repair on my 1975 h14, purchased a new halyard, installed new rudder cams, and added a rake adjustment line.

the wind was picking up nicely on the bay with whitecaps, so I decided to go out, i got everything over to the beach and then the problems started, i unhooked the halyard and it zipped to the top of the mast , so me and a friend had to lean the boat over and get it unstuck, then hooking up the sail the wind caught it, (10-15 knots) and i started running it up with a twist in it and the batten caught in the tramp, got that straight and got out there and managed a quick tack with a tiny back around... this is with me 135lbs and my friend 160lbs (too much weight i know) then we're on a reach and i hear a loud snap, looking around i didnt see anything and didnt feel anything so we kept going. i keep looking around trying to find whats wrong and i see that the windward rudder is snapped clean off right below the casting. long story short, we got the boat in without further incident. needless to say as far as sailing is concerned, my summer isnt going well.

Im going to look at a h16 tomorrow so hopefully i can work out a deal there. Image

What a coincidence! I took my 14T out for the first sail of the summer today and I didn't have good luck either. We managed to break the furler, totally bend the shackle on the main halyard out of place and a bunch of other minor things. You just repaired your 14 and you're already looking to buy a 16!?lol

The old pastic rudders break. No big deal, it happens. Check the classifieds here, with your local dealer, and Craigslist. You should be able to dig up a set of used rudders.

When we bought our H14T we stopped at a lake on the way home (~800 miles one way trip to pick it up) and promptly snapped a rudder. Then later that summer we snapped the other one. That was the first time I remembered being on a sailboat (though my parents had an 18 when they were first married), so it was an interesting experience. Off topic, I'm also into Land Cruisers and could possibly help you identify the year of your FJ if you still don't know. Happy sailin'!

Not to open something old unnecessarily but i would like to update. I sold my 14 recently after getting an 80's 16 last summer, the exact year escapes me right now. I've been having lots of fun with the 16. hit 17 knots on gps the other day. I was on the trap and he was sitting on the rail.

When i broke the rudders i ended up getting new plastic ones. The local hobie dealer had factory discolored ones for cheap.

By FJ i meant flying junior dinghy. It's a total pig, haha.
