I recently purchased an old (1984?) Hobie 14'. I was inspecting for loose bolts, etc, when I noticed the tramp frame was secured to the catamarans with plastic nuts on stainless bolts. All were cracked and need replacing--are they supposed to be plastic? I wouldnt think so, but I guess you never know.

They're plastic to prevent overtightening.

Those bolts are only there to keep the hulls from falling off (shear). If you overtighten them, you'll crack the corner casting.

You can replace them with SS lock nuts, but only tighten them to the point of being snug.

Yes Exactly MBounds, they are plastic. You should be careful in tightening them because they tend to crack easily. If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask again.

The plastic nuts seem silly but they serve their purpose perfectly. I have found replacement nuts both at my local dealer for a few bucks a set. If you crack one you can sometimes find these in the specialty fasteners section of your local "real" hardware store. Not the big box kind.
