Post subject:  Absolute novice, mast and tension questions
Hi everyone,

I'm in Sydney, Australia and I've just bought a 3rd hand H14. Although it says 'Turbo' on the side it doesn't have the jib kit, trapeze etc, but it does have a dolphin striker on it.

Anyway I digress. I'm practising getting the rigging up and we got the mast up yesterday but were concerned if we had got it right. Am I right in saying that the mast ball just sits in the cup and that the shrouds, forestay and the mast's weight are the only thing keeping it in there?

For a novice this type of set-up has me nervous. What stops the mast from jumping out especially when you capsize?

We decided that we should tension the shrouds and forestay tight to keep the mast snug, but the rotation suffers when it's really tight.

I've uploaded a pic of the mast step with mast.

Is this standard how far out it is sitting? Should there be something securing the mast base to the step?

I know the rake is all wrong in this picture and it's too forward.

So my questions are:

1. Is the weight of the mast all that holds the mast in the step or am I missing something?

2. How loose should the rigging be? I've seen mentions of being able to turn the shrouds 90 degrees with my fist, but won't the mast jump out when it's that loose? Does the mast ever jump out?

3. I'm 64 Kg ( 141lbs) will I struggle righting this on my own? (I'm thinking of getting a mini bob)

We are going to play with getting the rake right over the coming days, and purchasing a mast step link kit so that I can learn to get the mast up solo.

Nope, you're not missing anything. Weight of the mast and sails holds it together while sailing.

If you're sailing with a loose rig (like most racers), then use the tail of the main halyard to lash the mast down - run it between the dolphin striker and the cleat:

The Bob will actually make it harder to right - it just prevents the boat from going turtle. Just make sure your mast is sealed and you shouldn't have any problems.

Thanks mate. That looks like a good plan with the halyard around the striker. I might chuck the mast in the lake on it's own and see if it floats. :lol: The last thing I need is to turtle while I'm getting to grips with the new boat.

Thanks for posting that great photo!

Can I ask you if the mast rotation arm is from a 17/17 Sport or an H18/H18SX? Have you eliminated the "cast-in" stops and regulate the mast rotation by the arm alone?

The one-piece mast rotator arm (it's the same on all the boats) works well on the 14. You need to install the reinforcing kit (look closely - diamond shaped plates on the mast) so you don't collapse the mast section.

The rules governing the mast rotation control are:

altered, but the casting rotation stops shall not
be removed, and the mast shall remain free to
rotate from side to side. The mast shall not have
controls to permit adjustments while racing, except
as outlined in Rule # 3.5 of these rules and
Rule #16.1 of the General Rules.

3.5 A mast rotation control kit as supplied by HOBIE
CAT CO may be mounted. The mast rotation
control purchase shall not be greater than 2:1
and the mast rotation kit shall not have controls
to permit adjustments while on trapeze.


In practicality, most racers "alter" their mast base casting rotation stops so that they no longer engage the stop on the mast step casting.

Also, we've found that the mast rotation control is almost more trouble than it's worth. Because of the way it's rigged, the setting changes when you adjust the downhaul. The only real advantage is in heavy air, when you can overrotate the mast to depower.
