It was interesting reading this forum. I just picked up my first 14 to race next year in division 11. It's a 83 in great shape but the only thing I don't like is the wire dolphin striker. Any words of wisdom.

How do you tell what year a Hobie 14 was made? I'm trying to work out if mine is after 85.

Cheers

Should be an number engraved on the transoms. Last two digits would be the model year (1973 - onward)

If it's older than 1973, then there's a three or four digit number stamped on the front pylon. Not possible to tell exactly what year it is.

New post to an old thread!

HELL yeah, they're worth it!!!! My "new" boat is an '82 14t. These guys last forever! I also have an '84 16 which I've had since it was new.

Old Hobies are definitely worth it! Just check the hulls, sails etc. But the definitely hold value. I can't see spending 10 grand on a new one when $500 to 1k you can get a decent used one, and with a little up keep they'll last forever. In fact I had a hobie 14 I bought 2 years ago for $300 and sold for $700.... they can definitely be a wise investment if your smart and know what to look for.
