Can anyone remind me when I'm supposed to increase the tension on the forestay, on a jib-less, non turbo H-14? .... Is it when sailing downwind?

I remember reading a few opinions about this last season but can't remember what is the right way and why.

Also what is best when the winds are high e.g. gusts of 20 Knots?

Hobie U 2002 has a section on tuning the H14 located here:

The above is an excellent read, but the ultimate source of H14 tuning tips is Bob Curry here:

You pull on the forestay tensioner (line from bridle/forestay vertex to front crossbar cleat) when going downwind to rake the mast forward.

If you do it going upwind (or forget to let it off), you'll quickly find out how strong the cleat and/or the line is. Don't ask me how I know.

If the wind's up over 20, you're awfully brave to get near the front crossbar to pull it on. You really don't need to put it on - the wind will keep the mast tipped forward.

Thanks, I'll just leave it off then as I'm pretty forgetful with things like that and the wind here is almost always around 15 Knots so it sounds like I'll mess things up if I forget.

On the last sail I left the link pin in the mast and had to unscrew the link to get the mast off as it was all bent out of shape. :) So the less to remember the better.
