Hey guys, Has anyone had any issues with the old style, smaller holed chainplates? I recently ordered new clevis pins and to my surprise, the 1/4" pins didn't fit. In all my years sailing, I never knew that there was two different chainplates to choose from. Turns out the dealer didn't either. I think this is strictly a 14 thing, as all the H16, Nacras, etc. I've ever seen had the 1/4" holed chainplates. Anyway, 1. Does anyone still use the smaller holed versions? Any reason to upgrade? 2. Anyone ever drill out the 3/16" holed versions to accomodate the 1/4" pins? I already have the replacement 1/4" pins and if the chainplates are the same other than hole dimensions, then why not? Anyone have experience with failure from either the 3/16" pin or from a drilled chainplate? Thanks! ~Pae |

I think the change to 1/4" on the 14 was likely around the time we offered a Turbo version. 1982 ish? No problem with the 3/16" pins that I am aware of. It was probably an inventory simplification more than anything else. |

I have an older 14 where a previous owner has drilled the chain plates out. How can I tell this? Some holes were drilled out and some were not. Go figure. Other than the fact that some of the holes are not useable with 1/4" pins there have been no problems. Some day maybe I'll fix that. I think you'd be safe in assuming you can do the same. Dave W |
