Hello guys, I just bought a used Hobie 13 and the cat itself is in very good condition. When I now had a closer look to the mast I found a black tape at the lower part of the mast near the maststep. i removed this tape and found a 10cm crack. This crack is not continous and i am wondering, that the crackis at this position!!! the "disconnection point" is black so i think this crack is not new. What do you think about this crack should I do anything (weld it or put in an inner tube from the partitioning kit) or just let it as it is? I cannot immagine that there are forces during normal sailing that evoke such a sort of crack and at this position???! http://postimage.org/image/njxfpd5w/ What do you suggest? This kind of crack is almost certainly caused by water freezing in the mast. Was the boat stored mast up in the winter? Anyway, because the crack is near one end, it is not in a critical location. If you know someone who is very good at welding thin aluminum (6061 T-6 alloy), then you could have them lay a bead over the crack to seal it up. You need to find where the mast is leaking and seal it up to prevent reccurance. |

Thanks a lot for your information. i just bought the cat and there was water in the upper part of the mast. No clou where it came in. Therefore I could imagine that the lower part is also not close. I store the mast in the garage after sailing so from now no new water can freeze. I think i will have a look to it after sailing and try to find a welder to sometimes do the cosmetics  Thanks and best greetings, Metsche |

You may want to consider drilling a small hole at either end of the crack. Doing this reduces the stress concentration at the end of the crack and prevents it from getting any bigger. sm |
