The piece sticking down straight under the mast is the dolphin striker. It adds support to the structure of the catamaran... and is necessary if you are going to trapeze a Hobie 14. If your cat is an H14 Turbo (Turbo has a jib), it has a dolphin striker.

Is that a cable or a metal strap? Is it preloaded?

The "Striker Rod" in the picture is a cable. That is an aftermarket accessory for older Hobie 14s. As of 82? the striker became standard on 14s as we sold most as "Turbo" versions.

The standard striker rod on Hobie 14, 16, 17, 18 and 20s is a stainless rod.

Tension? We don't put a lot of pre-tension on them. They are just installed snug (without slop). When the mast is rigged it prevents the crossbar from flattening down.

Will 1/4" rod do for a H14 ?

I am interested in trapping only.

Thanks
Al
