Post subject:  jib furler- how to rewind it?

We are revivng a 1978 h14t that was a gift, everything is just about together except for replacing a few lines. But the furler has the cord all pulled out. Can anyone give us general steps to rewind the cord?

Furlers are a kind of sea-saw action. Furl the jib and when you pull it out... it spins the drum winding the line in... or wind the drum, hoist the jib, then pull the furler line to unwind the drum which furls the sail. The system is designed to furl in one direction, so just be aware of the furler line as it enters the drum... You can wind in the wrong direction which will cause the line to cut a slot in the housing. Looking from the bottom, you spin the drum in a counter clockwise direction to load the line in.

thanks!that will get us started... love this forum!!
update- we cleaned the furler- bees must have loved it at one time.

So just to verify- there is no spring tension on the spool- once the cord is out jib is in (wrapped/furled) and stays in, with cord cleated off), and once jib is out by pulling on jib, cord is wound and stopper knot keeps cord in cleat.

thanks!!

Yep that's right. The weight of the jib itself actually does the unfurling as the jibstay is at an angle. The second you release/let go of the line the furled jib will unfurl rapidly and pull the line into the furler.

You need enough line so that it still reaches the front cross beam where you cleat it off when the jib is unfurled. It's such a simple piece of equipment and yet so handy.

really nice!!- once I fiddled a bit - no problem. surprised it is still working fine. Bees nest must have protected it from the elements!

thanks for the note!

now we need to replace the mast base onthe mast. nub for link to mast step link kit is broken off. seems like that link kit can make stepping the mast safer.
