Post subject:  Rudder Drilling - mods post template....

Hi, I've read about everything I can find on rudder drilling, and have printed the template out on card stock.

Referring to my hobie 14 now... the holes on my rudders align w/the 'A' holes on the template, BUT I've only got a hair over 1 inch of rake, and I'd like 1 5/8 or 1 3/4...

Which hole(s) and which direction do I need to move to get more rudder rake?

<e.g.> lower hole, w/front of rudder to the left, move 2 hole widths towards 8'oclock... or something?

The rudders used to snap down and kick up great, but they did travel out about 1.5 inches from the lower casting when sailing... I didn't care, I just held on harder... but it's time to get it all working properly and I'm tired of mis-drilling and filling w/JB Weld!

Thanks.

Yes I did, about 3 times w/highlighting, etc, etc....

I get it, and think I'll "practice" on an old plastic rudder until I get the holes right where I want them... again, looking for lots of rake, so the adjustment screws are all the way in at lower castings...

it'll only be a black art a few more times until I get it!

Rob: According to an old post by Matt B., you may need to move the upper hole forward and up a little:

viewtopic.php?f=14&t=32941&p=129673&hilit=hole+rudder#p129673

Do you have adjustable upper castings, and is the plate as far forward as it will go? If so, I can't imagine how you're not getting enough forward rake. As for the set screw in the lower catings, just remove them or cut/grind them flush...they don't do anything useful. As BigWhoop posted in a similar thread earlier this year, they are for adjusting how deep you want to punch a hole in the front of your rudder blade!

Good luck, man!

Thanks for the link Jerome, that may be what I needed... it's the new style adjustable...

Like I said the holes I have align perfectly w/the template, but just don't do what I want on the boat. Will move the lower hole forward like the link says.

Will get my daughter on the boat this weekend soloing and want a gentle helm.

Cheers,
Rob
