Post subject:  Hobie 14 Turbo conversion

Little by little, I am finishing the conversion of my 81 hobie 14 to a turbo. Wolf's Marine in MI. ordered the new chain plates for me but the "8010181 RIVET 6-4 PN HD MONEL" are on backorder indefinetly. Will try to find another source. I understand the 3/16" dia, 4/16" grip Monel rivet part. But what is the "PN HD" spec ?


What size rivets are used for the Dolphin Striker post - to - front beam ?
They are not listed in the rivet list.

Rivet Diameter in .........Maximum Grip Length
32nds of an Inch .........in 16ths of an Inch
(-6 = 6/32 = 3/16) .......(-04 = 4/16 = 1/4)

Jon- The pnhd spec is for a pan head rivet ( head kind of looks like an upside down pan ) as opposed to a countersunk or flat- head rivet. For the dolphin striker post- you could measure the holes in the post and see if they're countersunk or flush,and guess the depth- I think 1/4 inch grip range would probably work. I have an '82 but it has the rigid dolphinstriker. The turbo conversion's worth the trouble! 14's forever!

Thank you very much. I was trying to remember all the nomemclature that was used for the 'Cherry Max' rivets we used on the Navy Helicopters. I think pan heads were referred to as button heads, I even ordered rivet guns, but 13 years is a long time to remember for a jet engine mechanic working in the supply/tool room for a few months. (':oops:')

The dolphin striker has a slight reccession, so pan heads will work. I needed to know what grip range to use since the holes are different depths, (? 9/32" & 15/64" ?). I still need to clean the old silicon and corrosion off the striker. I guess the angle/position under the beam is just the best fit with no gaps ?

I can use the info for the chain plates & rivets, assume the same thickness in the front / side beams (? 11/64" ?) and make sure the grip range in there. Then find someone with an air rivet-gun or hydraulic hand gun. We never pulled 5 or 6s with a cheap hand gun. (':D')

update: My calculations determine the striker needing 2) 6-7 & 4) 6-8 rivets. (':D')
