I just picked up a Hobie Cat. I know very little about the particulars of this boat. It looked little sad looking when I went to get it, but I have since washed it down. Here is what I am working with:

Enough of the boats old life. I Mounted the thing on the back of my pickup to bring it home. Its a good thing I lived fairly close by.

I would really like to ID this boat. I know its a 14, but the year is unknown. Any help or comments appreciated.

You can say that again. That poor boat looks like it's been neglected for decades. What's the deal with the brown stuff all over the decks? I would hope it's just dirt, but it looks like some type of crude fiberglass repair (cheap attempt at repairing soft spots)? It also looks like there is a nice chunk taken out of the outboard hull lip by the front starboard pylon. And the tiller crossbar's broken.

If you payed anything for that boat, then you probably paid too much.

The boat was free.
I took it home and cleaned it up:

Then I took the thing apart and realized that I needed 3 of 4 pylons due to them being cracked. The sail will give me a good pattern to work off of.

After catching the bug. I looked on Ebay and my local Craigslist and, well... This beauty followed me home for next to nothing.

This one can be sailed today, but the pontoons are a bit soft. I am not sure which pontoons are better. The red ones are water tight, but have soft spots on the tops and one with a slightly soft side. and the green ones are solid as a rock with many holes, damage, and some cracks. Looks like Ill just dig in and see what I find. Its just fiberglass right?

I am new at all of this, so if you guys have any ideas or words of wisdom for me, by all means comment away.

I think its Blood. Looks like a predatory type of bird used it for a feeding spot more than once.

Somebody did a nice job of sanding off all the non-skid - that's the clear fiberglass resin/glass and UV browned foam underneath the gel coat. You can see where they tried to paint it with white rattle-can paint. They must have run out.

Ya. they sanded it down to the resin. I have some ideas on how I can put the non slip stuff back on there.

Its quite sad really. I felt sorry for the poor little boat. When I was picking it up, a guy came by and told me that the thing has been sitting there for years. I kinda dig the green tops w/2 tone.

Looks like it was last registered in 2007, suggesting that it has been unused for 4 to 5 years.

Nice catch.

I worked on the boat. I marked all the soft spots and started to sand down the paint. I found the serial number too.
