I have recently picked up a Hobie 14 early 1970 model and it needs some TLC, there is some damage near the rudder bod where the fiberglass has torn out, it needs all new ropes because they were all left out in the weather for 20 years, and there is one thing I am not sure about, the boat has a trapeze but no jib so does that make it a H14T or a H14. Any tips and tricks to do with painting them a different colour (1970's green does not cut it) and putting the right stuff back on would be nice also some tips with fiberglass repairs would also be nice. That cutout in the lip at the rudder pin makes no difference at all unless it is leaking there. Racers used to cut this out in order to get more rake. If your boat doesn't have a dolphin striker it's not a 14T. Can't really tell from your photos. |

If a am racing in a hobie 14 regatta am I aloud to use the trapeze? And no dolphin striker. |

Adjustable systems are optional. See the class rules here: http://www.hobieclass.com/site/hobie/ih ... 120401.pdf It sounds like you have a common non Turbo H-14 which doesn't have the striker. As I understand it, the H-14 didn't have a trapeze when it was first produced, but it was added later. |

If you are going to trapeze on the 14, you should add a dolphin striker. All that extra weight (you) hanging from a wire attached to the mast ultimately puts more stress on the front crossbar. The dolphin striker acts as a brace for the crossbar. |

I'm sure there are Hobie dealers down under that would be happy to sell you a dolphin striker. There's two ways to buy one. 1) you can buy the individual pieces which include a new mast step, horizontal dolphin striker rod, and the verticle rod that passes through the mast step. Just think of a H16 dolphin striker and you've got it. The sum of those parts comes to $226 US through Mariner Sails, the Dallas, Texas, Hobie Dealer. 2) You can purchase the dolphin stiker kit from a Hobie dealer for $96 US. However, the kit, which I have on my boat and I feel is adequate, has a steel cable that runs horizonatally across the boat below the front crossbar and a post that extends down from the front crossbar to hold it in place. If you can't find a dealer in Australia that will help you out, try Mariner sails, http://www.mariner-sails.com. One member of their staff, John Webster, is a fellow Aussie and I'm sure he knows how to ship stuff home. |

Thanks guys you have been so helpful but one more thing I was rigging the boat the other day and the ropes aren't going to cut it to say the least, and I cannot fund a list of the rope sizes and gauges for the whole boat would anyone be able to give me a list of the correct sizes? Thank you |

But i noticed that the traveler car rope is not on there, nor are the righting lines. do you know what to use? |

The end of the mainsheet is run through the swivel cam cleat, the traveler car and then dead-ended at the eye strap on the crossbar. 5/16" will work for a mainsheet, as well, it's all up to your preference, especially what feels good to your hands. http://static.hobiecat.com/2010_archive/support/pdfs/e_h14manual.pdf (Figure 36) As far as righting lines, there are many different options there. Some people tie a single line around the dolphin striker, or center of front crossbar, while others run a line around the pylons that have a bungee cord in the center to automatically retract it. If you have the old mainsheet, that would be good to take along. The righting line has to big enough to grip it easily and it has to be long enough to do its job. The Hobie 16 Assembly Manual recommends 1/2" poly rope, 15 to 20 feet long. The yellow righting line is tied to the dolphin striker and threaded through the center lacing for storage and easy access. |
