Here's how I'm doing it... Prior to tacking, pull excess sheet from windward jib block in. Ease rudders into the tack, keeping them at a constant angle, about 30 degrees. Pop the main when head to wind, let the jib backwind, I'm now facing backward and flipping the tiller extension around while moving to the other side. Pop the cleated (now windward) jib block and quickly sheet the leward jib block, not tight, just roughed in. Main is loose still. (If I can do it, I try to get just one big pull on the jib and that's it) Trim the main as you straighten the tiller and accelerate on the new tack. Lastly fine tune the jib. Is there a better way? |

This weekend, I was messing around with pre-cleating the windward jib sheet prior to tacking. That way, after the backwind is let go, the jib holds wind and doesn't unsheet and luff wildly. Plus I can more easily give it a quick pull to rough it in. The same was effective for gybes; having the jib pre-cleated on the windward side made gybing smoother. |
