Post subject:  New Hobie 14 Mast-Rotation: YES !!!

Like I answered in the forum of catsailor.com my opinion is to change the mastrotation on Hobie 14, but to be careful with it.
It was a big enthusiasm on the Worlds in germany for a new mast-rotation.
Sailors from Germany, Denmark, Netherlands, Great Britain, South Africa, Brazil and Australia said that they want something new.
The pics that where sended from David Brookes show some problems.
I created a email-circle with 14 sailors from all arround the world. I would say that 90% of them say that the new mast-rotation is a good idea.
There just has to be cheap and easy to change older 14s.
I will bring the following idea to decide in the next Germen Hobie council in Cologne in next Febuary.

A: Allow every modifications on the old mast-rotation
B: Allow a mast-controller for the old mast-rotation
C: Support the a new mast-rotation, like on the Tiger. If there is a good chance to have a cheap contruction which is easy to put on an old 14, Germany will support it.
D: This decissions will go into practice when EHCA and IHCA decide positive about it.

Post subject:  Change rotation system?

I believe the Tiger style rotation system has been withdrawn from review as an option for the 14 and 16. This idea is to be abandoned due to the change in the height of the rotation point, which would be higher than current system. This would cause a boat with a newer system to have different rig geometry than a boat with the current system. This is not acceptable. The only option is to keep the rotation point at the same height as the current system.

Post subject:  Mast Rotation

Yes... You are right.
Thats another negative thing I forgot. It is also discussed in Europe.
But still our opinion is to have a mast-rotation like this.
But:
- easier to change
- cheaper
- and not as high as it is

If there is an better offer, we will support it.

Post subject:  SIMPLE Reply

Hey guys!!

I'm all in favor of:

1. Foam battens
2. 4:1 downhaul NOT usable from the trapeze.

That's it!!

It's too easy; keep it simple. If you want fancy rotation systems, etc then I advise you go sail another boat (FX-One).

Post subject:  No Polemics, please !!!

I don't want to sail the FX-One !!!!
I will sail the 14 for my whole live !!!
You were world-champion and you get respect from me.
But this is 20 years ago...
The 14 class is a new one now. The 14 class is that what I saw at the worlds in Travemünde. I saw no US-Sailor there...
The sailor who competed on the worlds would like to sail with a new mast-rotation. Thats the fact.

Post subject:  I agree with Bob

I like the 14 for how simple it is. It's old school sailing. I plan on getting one more for my daughter when she is old enough. We sail against everyone from a silver medalist to people learning how to sail. All of these changes would just widen the gap between these two groups. If I want to be able to adjust everything I will sail my I20. My wife and I both have 14s as well as my brother. The foam battens will make the boat easier to right.
