Post subject:  Rudder cam questions

I can't seem to get the rudders to lock/click up or down. The cam looks fairly unworn, but it doesn't seem to move much. I would say the maximum deflection for the little hook part is a sixteenth or less(of an inch).
In normal operation, I'm guessing a hard shove of the tiller aft should lock the rudders down, and lifting the tiller should let them up..correct?
The aluminum castings will keep them up, but the keeping them down part is not working. What is the normal cam movement amount?
And dang, those Delrin screws are locked in tight.
This is an early H14, and there is no adjustment on the cam, other than spring tension.
Thanks for your help

From unlock to lock they rotate about 90 degrees. If your boat has been sitting for several years they are probably just frozen from disuse. If they have frozen in the down, locked position your rudders will never lock. You need to force a flat, thin screwdriver between the casting and the cam and try to rock it back. If you can see the hook part of the cam they are probably stuck in the up position though. Work them a little (rock back and forth) with WD-40. More than likely the spring plunger is stuck (corroded) in the bore. If none of this works you will need to drill the cams out and replace them along with the springs and plungers.

There is not much you can do about frozen Delrin screws other than drill them out, tap the threads to clean them up and replace them. There are several threads on this...search the forum.
