Hobie 14/16 side rail

Can I cut down a 16 side rail to fit a 14 frame?

Took my boat out in the ocean for the first time this weekend ... had a blast! Only the 4th time I have been out, but I am getting the hang of it ... How fast do I have to get goign to to fly a dern hull? ... wind was only about 12 mph.

Sidebar is the same on the 14-16. The 14 is a bit shorter and has the shroud chain plate.

Yes, you could cut down a H16 sidebar to make one for the 14.

Shroud chain plate? ... not familiar with that term ... How much would i have to cut off? Are we talking major difficulty and I should wait until someone is selling a pair of 14 side rails ... (if anyone has any that they would like to sell let me know) ...

The shroud chainplate is where the shroud attachs on the old 14's. It is actually attached to the sidebar rather than the hull like the 16. Mine wore out and caused a demasting, check for corrosion around them!!!

I am located in orlando ... that is where my side rail split, but it is reinforced w/ two steel pieces on either side ... It is functional for now, but a terrible eye sore ... if cutting down the 16's isn't very difficult I can probably handle it (I am a pretty handy guy) ... I just didn't know how close 16 parts were to 14 parts

It is a simple conversion.

Lay the old 14 side bar next to the 16 replacement. Cut of a few inches off the aft end (opposite the tramp flaired opening) to match the length. Mark the new sidebar with the chainplate position. Drill and rivet... done.

H14 Sidebar is 74 3/4" over all length
Chainplate is positioned 24" aft (Tramp opening goes forward)

If you're going to replace the side rails, I'd recommend switching to the 16 metod of attachment (under the lip of the hull). I've seen disaster from the corrosion at the chainplate, the rail breaks, and you can imagine...

It means longer shrouds, or maybe just a long extension...

Go a wire size larger while you're at it too...
