Hey Folks -

Recently acquired my first sailboat- a '79 Hobie 14 ...sans a mainsheet block system unfortunately.

I've done a lot of research and seen a lot of conflicting information / parts that are no longer made. Looking for some clarification. Worth noting I'm in Canada, would be great to source from here to avoid import fees.

Planning to run it 6:1, with a Harken 40mm triple upper block.

I'd like to run a 57mm triple block as the lower - but I'm not sure what folks use now from Harken, or anywhere really.

Here is what I am planning to buy: https://ca.binnacle.com/Harken-57-mm-Ca ... _info.html

Will this work? Does it need to be modified to attach to the traveller? It doesn't have a ratcheting system, but I'm assuming that isn't essential for recreational day sailing.

Any insight is helpful. Thanks!

Kristian

Looks like the right block, but I would recommend getting one with a ratchet. Recreational sailing or otherwise, it will be much easier on your hand and arm when hand-holding the sheet, especially in a breeze. You can always turn the ratchet off if you decide you don’t want it.

No modifications should be needed, other than you may need to bend the tabs on the traveler car out slightly where the clevis pin attaches the block to the traveler car.

Thanks for this.

Yeah, including a ratchet also really ups the price and scarcity.

Currently leaning towards these Nautos ones... although I haven't really heard or seen reviews of them.

Those Nautos blocks came with the new 14’s and the 5:1 version comes on the new Getaways, both work quite nicely so far (couple years)

Good to know.

Found a supplier with a good price on some Harken stuff, so for the records ended up going with a Harken #2629.

Looking forward to gettin out there.
