Post subject:  CA - Lake Tahoe Sailing in 2 weeks on our Getaway

Hi all,

Chris and I are taking our Getaway to Tahoe in a couple of weeks for camping and sailing. While we've been there before, neither of us has sailed on that lake. We're camping on the West shore of Tahoe in Sugar Pine Point SP.

Where do we launch the Getaway anywhere near there?

Also, are the winds nasty up there or what? I looked at historical data on iwindsurf.com, and it showed between 15-20 most of the time, but I just wanted to find out what other people's experiences have been.

And finally, we did pick up 5mm wetsuits for the experience. I'm hoping that will be thick enough, since I believe 7mm would be right for diving up there, but we won't be diving (I hope).

Thanks, and looking forward to the responses!

HI
I lived in the area for a number of years. There are plenty of places to launch, a check of the sites is not difficult. The winds in the afternoon can howl. Chop on the lake can be really steep. Also, you really need to wear a full wetsuit, the water is really cold. I have seen keel boats scrambled during the afternoon wind, so be careful out there! It can be a lot of fun, just watch out and be prepared.

I would like to hear about your experience when you return. I have never sailed on the lake but I have heard the wind can come off the mountains without warning and knock you over pretty easily. Hope you had good sailing.

From Richards camp to Emerald Bay where the wind was to strong very high..only able to look around the entrance and enter 200 yards then retreated...Kayaking with AI and PA sail kayak..water color is blue. The
dock at Richards Camp is priced right and postioned well. I did not see the dock at Suger Pine park. Sandy beach north area is great.
