Hello all, if you have sailed and camped at Huntington Lake I would like to connect to get some info. Best places to camp, etc. I want to try a vacation up there next summer and am starting the planning now. Thanks in advance!

mistro - Camping: Catavee, Kinnikinnick, College, Rancheria... Lakeshore Resort is very reasonable, but very rustic.
If you plan on racing, check out the High Sierra Regatta & The Mile High Regatta. If you don't race then don't go there when they have those regattas.
Lots to do there in addition to sailing: horseback riding, hiking, swimming, Rancheria Waterfalls, drive to Mono Hot Springs and soak in the natural hot springs, very good mountain biking, watch satelites and shooting stars at night, look for bears..... Check with the Ranger Station at Lakeshore to see what else there is to do up there in addition to sailing.
Enjoy your vacation next summer.

richandpat, thank you for the info - that's very helpful. Perhaps with a little more about my slightly odd travel rig, you can help guide me. My family has a small travel trailer, and I transport my Hobie Wave on the top of the truck. My ideal situation is something where I can set up camp, unload and assemble the boat, then move it to the water and back on the beach wheels.

I'm not sure how long the trailer will support us on the dry camping spots but we need to go for at least 4 or 5 days to make the 300 mile drive worth it. It looks like some of the campsites might support my dream of keeping the boat ready to go but I wonder how far it is to a dump station if we fill up the tanks? If we stay at the Lakeshore RV park, I wonder where I would keep my boat? Thoughts on this? Thanks again for all the help!

mistro - If you stay at the Lakeshore RV Park with your small travel trailer you shouldn't need a dump station. They have showers, bathrooms, etc. The other campgrounds that I mentioned have bathrooms with flush toilets and there is a bathroom near the launch site and swimming area with flush toilets. Also, no need for beach wheels. The RV Park, Lakeshore Resort and the camping areas that I mentioned are all fairly close to the launch ramp/beach/swimming area. The launch ramp has a very large parking/boat set-up area. I would probably bring my boat there first and set it up and launch it and keep it on the beach first, then go to the RV Park. Just make reservations at the RV Park before you go. If you have a Hobie Wave you're probably not going to race, so go up there mid week, but still check on those regattas and make certain that you avoid them. The beach area gets filled up quickly and the launch gets very busy when there is a regatta.
You can purchase gas and food at Lakeshore, but it's expensive. We usually get gas down below around Fresno and get groceries at Prather before continuing on up to Lakeshore.
We've camped and sailed at Huntington Lake for about 20 years straight, but haven't been there for the past 2 summers. So, I suggest that you call the RV Park or ranger station up there to be certain that the information I'm giving you is still correct. We plan on going up there again this summer with our H 16. We'll probably stay at the Lakeshore Resort since my wife doesn't want to sleep on the ground any more.
If you're about 300 miles North of Huntington Lake you might want to check out Clear Lake in the town of Lakeport. It might be closer to you and it's really nice also.
I believe the campground we stayed at was Will-O-Point???
If you're coming from the South then check out Lopez Lake near Arroyo Grande/San Luis Obispo. It's also very nice for camping and sailing.
Good luck to you and your family!
Richard

Huntington Lake is beautiful. Tons of regattas and sailboats. A definate sailors' lake with decent steady winds.

Also saw something about Clearlake - avoid it!!! The lake itself is scary green at shore and for the first 50 yards out. Middle looks nice. Also, the campgrounds seem littered with meth-heads. Far from my fav place. For the same effort, head up to Donner and/or Tahoe.

Just so you know, the regatta has been canceled for the first time in decades due to a lack of water. There will be around 50% of a full pool and the ramps will be out of the water. I don't know about shore launching; I know it can be done, but the Powers That Be may forbid driving on the exposed lake bottom. Also, Upper and Lower Billy Creek campgrounds are being renovated, so this may be the first time in thirty-two years that we won't spend a week up there.

moncasta, I take it you went and sailed at Huntington last year? How would it be in an 18 with daggerboards? I saw pictures and it looked sort of okay, but I would be concerned with obstacles uner water. It appears there will be much lower than normal levels again this year. We normally camp there for 2 weeks in August. Missed 2013 due to my wife needing shoulder surgery. Missed last year because levels didn't look good. This year looks like a possible scrub too :(
