Calling Lake Alberta

Location Northern Alberta
Coordinates 55°15′N 113°18′W
Primary outflows Calling River
Surface area 134 km² (51.7 sq mi)
Surface elevation 610 m (2,001 ft)
Calling Lakt has a total area of 134 km² (51.7 sq mi) and is located in a large bend of the Athabasca River, 60 km north of the town of Athabasca on highway 813.

Calling Lake is egg shaped and the winds can howl like Santa Cruz. It is not unusual to see winds 15 to 20 knots. Calling lake has sandy beaches and clear water except for a couple of weeks when the algae bloom.
I am known for going out and sailing in the high winds.

It was a great place to sail. Its about 13 miles by 8 miles wide, approx half the width and length of Lake Tahoe. I have sailed in 6 ft waves on this lake.

In late June the sun sets around 11 PM and it is daylight again at 3 AM.
In August, we have laid down on the tarp and watched the northern lights.

There are a number of Hobies up at the lake – mostly 16s and 18s. It all started with my dad and the Hobie 16 that my son Jordan and I race with up there once a year. My dad helped found the Calling Lake Sailing club over 25 years ago which has its own land on the lake front and building for events. When I was commodore I donated a trophy for the best rookie in his memory.

I keep inviting Jeremy to come up for a visit but he hasn’t taken me up on it (yet). If I ever win the lottery or can convince some 20 sailers to take a long trip, maybe we could host the North Americans up there. In late June we could sail for 18-20 hours a day….
