Help! Is this fixable? The hulls are pretty solid (no delam) but it is an old boat. 73 model Hobie 16

I was sailing at the Texas City Dike in wind about 16-18 mph and setting on the edge of tramp frame flying this hull when it made a load crack/ tear sound. It lifted me up off my but as I was hooked in to the trap wire and getting a feel for things before pushing out.

My thoughts:
A piece of angle aluminum on the inside of the hull and bolted through the side of the hull with the angle trimmed off except where it extends out on top of the anchor bar. Then Fiberglass patch the top.

and maybe add a new Anchor bar about 3' long too?

Duct Tape? lol

Maybe just make it a cheap ugly fix for the rest of the season and watch for a new starboard hull?

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

The first question which comes to mind is ..is there insurance coverage on the boat?? An insurance co. might take this situation as a covered event...maybe not. The amount of damage looks like enough where they could "total" the hull. Given there is no insurance, you could repair it. It will entail some serious planning and knowledge of working with fiberglass & resin. How soon did you want to go sailing again?

No insurance :(

But, if I repair, I'm thinking ugly! I have no fiberglass experience.
So the drill and bolts and aluminum angle, stuff like that are my friends.
I'm not too sure I could fiberglass and make it strong again and pretty. I'm looking for another boat or hulls. I have another hull in my back yard but it is seriously delaminated and previously repaired by its former owner. (although that area of my spare hull is good)

I would like to sail again in 2 weeks?

Mike, This type of fix can be done, but it isn't by any means a quick one. It entails removing the inside foam sandwich material below the shroud anchor pin (on the inside of the hull). It also means using a mold of the deck lip to rebuild that area. I've got some photos I can send you of a crunch I repaired which is a smaller version of yours, but still required the same steps. With your fix being a structural one, you're going to need to seriously beef up the fiberglass on the inside. Another thing to consider adding to all this is one of the Hobie 18 "anchor plate kits" (p/n 64100001). With having no fiberglass repair experience I'd tell you to stay away from trying this fix yourself, and to find a friend who does. If you'd like to see some photos of what I described above send your private email address to [email protected]

Are the hulls from all Hobie 16 year models the same size if I should find one or two newer ones? Will my Trampoline frame slide on to the posts of any year model? Even new ones?

Thanks,

Splash,
I had similar damage but not as extensive as yours just recently. What happened with your situation? Were you able to repair or was it a replace?

I had a feeling that might be the case. I am impressed reading through the forums how talented people are at repairing their boats, I have zero experience or confidence in any repair I would make, especially structural. However, I may have lucked into another boat for free so not entirely lost, maybe a parts boat and a working boat....if my wife will tolerate the backyard clutter.

When your hull tore out did the boat capsize or demast? I am overall new to Hobies and I am just trying to figure how far south things might go.

It all stayed connected and I just sailed into shore a couple hundred yards. Lucky I guess

Good Luck!
