Post subject: | Rudder Sharpening |
My rudders hum and screach when going fast. I saw in a magazine a tool to sharpen rudders to stop this. Is that all it really takes is to sharpen them? How can i do that to my rudders without buying the tool? And if so how? Thanks for your help! |

A pair of scissors can be used if you're careful (plastic blades only). Just hold one blade of the scissors in both hands and use it like a scaper down the trailing edge of the blade, holding it at a shallow angle. If you're really serious about it, or if you have fiberglass blades (including EPO's), you need a file, a sanding block, 320 / 400 / 600 grit wet or dry sandpaper and a lot of elbow grease. There's a "bulb" on the trailing edge that causes the hum. You want to fair that into the rest of the blade. You don't want to put a sharp edge on the trailing edge of the rudder. A 1/16" squared off edge works much better and is not as easily damaged. |
